Laika is an American animation studio based in Portland , Oregon . The company consists of two departments, one engaged in the production of animation films and the other in the production of commercials and music videos. Laika is divided into the two departments Laika Entertainment and Laika / house . While the former is dedicated to the production of films, Laika / house makes computer-animated and stop-motion commercials and music videos. They produced advertisements for Coca-Cola , Ben & Jerry’s , Kelloggs , Apple , Starbucks and Honda, among others .

history

Laika emerged from Will Vinton Studios , which were already known then for stop-motion films and commercials. In the late 1990s, they found a large investor in Nike, among others . A son of co-founder Philip Knight was working as an animator at Will Vinton Studios at the time.

Vinton left the studios in 2003 because he struggled to fund subsequent productions. Henry Selick was hired as a director. The studios were renamed Laika.

In 2009, Laika closed her computer animation department and laid off 63 employees.

The company produced the computer-animated short film Moongirl (2005) and the stop-motion film Coraline (2009) for director Henry Selick . After unsuccessful attempts to renew his contract, Selick left Laika in October 2009.

In 2012, Laika produced ParaNorman, the first stop-motion film in which the characters' faces were created using 3D printers .

Awards

The company was nominated three times for the Annie Award , won eight Telly Awards and was nominated for the films Coraline , ParaNorman, The Boxtrolls and Kubo - The Brave Samurai for the Academy Awards in 2010 , 2013 , 2015 and 2016 .
