Lake is a German-British rock band that had its greatest successes in the 1970s.
Band history
The band began in Husum in 1967 with Oreste "Lilio" Malagia, Dieter Ahrendt, Gerd Beliaeff, Detlef Petersen , Fritz "Freddy" Graack and Martin Tiefensee as tornados . At times, Hans Hartz was also there as lead singer. In 1973 it was reorganized as Lake after the admission of Ian Cussick . After Cussick's departure in 1974, James Hopkins-Harrison became the band's lead singer. Especially in the USA, Lake celebrated successes. In addition to a placement on the Billboard Hot 100 , they received the gold record for the album Paradise Island . For the debut album Lake I there was the German Record Prize in April 1977 . The album Lake II made it to number 27 in the German LP charts, the fourth album Ouch! at number 46. In the German single charts, Lake never had an entry.
The band's hallmarks were the orientation towards West Coast rock, polyphonic choral singing and dense harmonies, such as those shaped by Steely Dan at the time.
In the 1980s, after many changes in the formation, the band no longer succeeded in building on the success of the 1970s. It broke up in 1988, lead singer James Hopkins-Harrison died in 1991 of a heroin overdose .
In 2003 Lake celebrated their comeback with a new line-up with a tour of Germany and released the album The Blast of Silence . The recording of a performance by the group in the Hamburg factory was released on DVD in 2006 . In 2007 Lake gave ten concerts in Germany.
A band was formed in the USA that also bears the name Lake. Since the musicians realized that the German lake already existed, they have been writing their name LAKE (according to the initials of the musicians' first names). Her previous albums, which were released in Germany in 2008 and 2009, bear the old lettering.
In 2010, Lake accompanied the US band Lynyrd Skynyrd as a support act on their God & Guns tour in Germany.
In 2012 the album Freedom was released . However, due to legal disputes with former singer Lloyd Anderson, it had to be taken off the market.
In February 2014, the album Wings of Freedom (vocals Ian Cussick) was released, which was promoted with a four-week tour of Germany.
On September 12, 2014 Lake's live tour album, Live - Wings of Freedom Tour Spring 2014 , was released as a limited edition. It is only the second, official live album of their career since 1982 and includes both the old classics and tracks from the studio album Wings of Freedom .
In July 2019, the current keyboardist, Jens Skwirblies, announced his departure from the band at the end of the same year on the Lake Facebook page.
