history

Rath'sches general (emeines) public (iches) hospital (around 1900); Inset : Franziska Rath, founder

Franziska Rath, née Naegele (* 1814 in Brno , † on July 19, 1880 in Baden near Vienna), was one of the great benefactors of Baden during the Wilhelminian era. With the donation (as a waiver of a loan granted by the city of Baden in 1876) of the horrific sum of 100,000 guilders and the property at Theaterplatz 5, it enabled the construction of a general public hospital in the spa town in accordance with the dedication - it was named as a memorial until the middle of the 20th century the honorary citizen (appointed 1878).

In the run-up to the start of construction, in addition to the financial question, the choice of the construction site was of great importance. Of the five places that were offered and considered possible, two were left: an area not far from the city center on Wiener Straße and the cheaper property on Wimmergasse in today's Leesdorf district offered by Melk Abbey . The hospital construction-Comité decided on 31 March 1881 a majority in favor of the construction site at the Vienna road. When the members of the committee in the local council had to defend their vote on September 14 of the same year, the minority's motion prevailed. In addition to its low price, the square in Leesdorf had some disadvantages (the proximity to the tram depot, livestock stalls, etc.), but for the city's central health resort it was difficult to imagine confronting guests with transporting the injured or those who had died in the hospital.

The construction of the hospital began in 1883, and on April 20, 1885, Mayor Oskar Graf Christallnig (1831–1898) opened the Rath'sche Badner Hospital as a general public hospital - with a capacity of 36 sick beds at the site next to the present one; In 1897, the facility was significantly expanded by an extension built by city architect Anton Breyer (1854–1940).

Baden State Hospital, built in 1983; dismantled around 2017

After the laying of the foundation stone on September 28, 1978, the opening of the "new building" with its two characteristic polygonal towers and 352 beds took place on July 16, 1983; on October 27 of the same year, work on the new building was declared finished.

The new hospital has been under construction at the same location since 2012. The new Baden State Hospital was officially opened in September 2016. On a gross floor area of 64,000 m², three pavilions were created connected by a central entrance hall, 443 beds and six ultra-modern operating theaters. The neighboring old care home has already been replaced by a new building.

The municipality of Baden was the owner of the hospital until January 1st, 2003, then the state of Lower Austria, which renamed it the Thermenklinikum Baden . At the beginning of 2005, the two hospitals in Mödling and Baden were merged to form the Thermenregion regional hospital . In 2008 the Baden State Hospital was responsible for the inpatient care of around 19,000 patients. The patients are divided into six departments and three institutes. Around 780 people are now employed in this regional hospital.

reachability

On the part of the Wiener Lokalbahn ( Badner Bahn ), which runs past the hospital, a new stop including a technically secured level crossing went into operation under the name "Baden Landesklinikum" with a timetable change on December 12, 2014. This means that the nearby sports and event halls are easier to reach again.

In the course of the new construction of the hospital, a multi-storey car park was built to replace the underground car park located under the former main wing, but it is located on the other side of Badner Bahn and Waltersdorfer Strasse and which, for reasons of (planning) safety for pedestrians, can only be reached above ground.
