The State Museum for Art and Cultural History is an art museum at Gottorf Castle in the city of Schleswig . The museum was founded in the 1880s and has been in the castle since 1945.

The core topic is the cultural history of Schleswig-Holstein from the Middle Ages to the present. The exhibition area is 25,000 m². Since 1998 the foundation Schleswig-Holsteinische Landesmuseen Schloss Gottorf has been responsible.

collection

The art of the Middle Ages is shown in the imposing Gothic Hall . One focus of the Renaissance painting collection is the group of works by Lucas Cranach the Elder . The Gutenberg Bible from 1452/54 is a particular treasure . One of the exhibits in the Gothic Hall is the Landkirchen reredos , a late Gothic altarpiece from the vicinity of Bertram von Minden .

The Plön Hall represents the 18th century

Pictures, sculptures and handicrafts give an impression of the earlier ducal collections in Gottorf's baroque heyday. Furniture and valuable table utensils from the Middle Ages to the present are a focus of the collections. This includes a unique collection of Northern European faience . Various works of art from all over Schleswig-Holstein have been brought together in the castle, which are presented according to epochs, especially in the west and north wings. For example, the so-called Plön Hall was built in around 1930 from the paneling of the Plön Castle , which complements the exhibition as an example of the art of the 18th century. The most important representatives of the “Golden Age” of Danish painting are presented in the 19th century gallery. In the Art Nouveau department, painting, sculpture and handicrafts combine to create a total work of art. In the Gallery of Classic Modernism with the Rolf Horn Foundation, major works by the three great North German masters of Expressionism can be seen: Emil Nolde , Ernst Barlach and Christian Rohlfs . The exhibition also includes a collection of contemporary art that is representative of Northern Germany. In the so-called Kreuzstall, art of the 20th century is presented across all genres: fine arts, handicrafts and design enter into a dialogue, the polyphony of which is characteristic of the 20th century.

Premises

The largest part is in the main building, on the ground floor and on the first floor. Special exhibitions take place in the riding arena, in the Kreuzstall or in the main building.
