The Langener Waldsee in Langen (Hesse) , about 15 km south of Frankfurt am Main , is the largest swimming lake and the largest body of water in the Rhine-Main area with 58 hectares .

location and size

The Langener Waldsee offers a 900-meter-long sandy beach on around seven hectares of separate swimming areas, as well as opportunities for surfing, sailing, fishing and camping as well as a large nudist area. The communal facility is open from the beginning of May to mid-September, there are 800 indoor parking spaces, the outdoor parking spaces are limited.

He's mostly a former, on the western edge but still unused quarry pond and part of a 240-hectare site with other small lakes, where the company Sehring Sand & Gravel GmbH & Co KG since 1927 high quartzous Main sand and - gravel degrades. These are mainly used as concrete aggregates in the neighboring mixed concrete plant for further processing.

According to DKP Mörfelden-Walldorf , which is committed to preserving the forests in the region, around 30 hectares of forest, including around 15 hectares of protected forest , will be cleared for mining operations and further clearing of around 60 in the 40 years up to 2018 ha are planned.

The body of water is an exposed section of groundwater without tributaries, surrounded by large areas of forest, so the water quality is good. One problem is the soil erosion on the flattened bathing banks: sand has to be refilled regularly because the open areas harden and would otherwise be bare full of channel-like depressions.

On May 17, 1972, the Waldsee , which had been converted into a lido , was inaugurated by the Hessian Minister of Social Affairs, Horst Schmidt . In 2019 the staff and supervisory building was replaced with container structures.

The use of the lake is relatively strictly separated: while the north bank has been assigned the swimming, sport and recreational function, the partly shallow south bank is left to nature. Only inflatable boats are allowed in the lido area. The use of the remaining water area for fishing and water sports of all kinds is regulated by a special agreement between the city of Langen and the water sports clubs located on the north bank (see web links). The entire area except for the north bank is the site of the Sehring company; numerous signs indicate that entering the shore and swimming is prohibited.

Up to 20,000 people visit the lake on hot summer days, which is why there are often major traffic jams around the facility, which are reported in the traffic reports of the regional radio stations. Those who want to avoid these traffic jams can comfortably take the Waldseebus from the Dreieich-Buchschlag S-Bahn station directly to the entrance. The entrance fees for this natural lido are somewhat lower than those of urban pools.

Location in films

The Langener Waldsee also served as a backdrop for numerous films. For example, the Waldsee was one of the central locations for the crime series Tatort: Schattenboxen , which appeared in 1981, with Chief Detective Bergmann. Various scenes for the image film of the city of Langen were also shot here.
