Vegetative characteristics

The long-haired thyme grows as a dwarf shrub and reaches heights of 3 to 10 centimeters. It has lignified stems below and creeping runners above ground . This species does not have a very aromatic smell, but when the leaves or flowers are rubbed, the characteristic smell of thymi develops.

The blooming four-edged stems are erect and only significantly more hairy on two or two sides. The leathery, coarse foliage leaves are up to 12 millimeters in length ovate to spatulate, ciliate at the base and underneath with distinct nerves.

Generative characteristics

The flowering period extends from May to September. The flowers are in a head-shaped inflorescence with leaf-like bracts. The hermaphrodite flowers are zygomorphic with a double flower envelope . The bell-shaped chalice is two-lipped. The crown is pink to purple in color and has two lips.

The number of chromosomes is 2n = 56 or 54.

Occurrence

The long-haired thyme thrives in the mountains of southern and central Europe. In Austria , the long-haired thyme is often from the subalpine to alpine altitude range , is absent in Burgenland and Vienna. In Germany, this subspecies occurs only in southern Bavaria .

The long-haired thyme grows in sunny locations in dry and steppe grasslands on warm, base-rich, stony or sandy soils from the valley up to 2800  m . In the Allgäu Alps, it rises on the Nebelhorn to an altitude of 2000 meters. It is a species of character of the order Seslerietalia albicantis.
