Life

Lassie Lou Ahern was born in Los Angeles in 1920. In 1923, at the age of three, she was seen at the side of her older sister Peggy Ahern (1917-2012) in the silent film The Call of the Wild , after she had been discovered by the comedian and actor Will Rogers the year before . In the following years she became known through several short films The Little Strolche (Our Gang) by Hal Roach . In 1927 she was cast by Universal Studios for the role of Little Harry in Uncle Tom's Cabin . Although the character in Harriet Beecher Stowe's book is a boy, those responsible thought Ahern was more suitable. In the same year she shot her last silent film with Little Mickey Grogan and at the same time her only leading role.

After her career as a child star, Ahern performed with her sister as a singer and dancer under the name The Ahern Sisters in nightclubs and hotels. In the 1940s she played as a young woman in several films, including an extra role in The House of Lady Alquist alongside Ingrid Bergman . Her return to the film business was unsuccessful. A year later, she finally ended her career as a film actress.

In the 1970s Ahern appeared as a star guest in several US television series , including in 1974 in Männerwirtschaft and 1975 in Petrocelli . She then withdrew into private life, but continued to appear as an interview partner and at film festivals. In 2016 she also campaigned for the restoration and publication of her last silent film, Little Mickey Grogan , of which only a single copy still exists in a film archive in Paris . Lassie Lou Ahern died in February 2018 at the age of 97, and before her death she was one of the last remaining actors of the silent film era.
