Latin-German and German-Latin concise dictionary
The Latin-German and German-Latin Concise Dictionary is a Latin - dictionary , the first from 1826 to 1862 Georg Heinrich Lünemann and then by Karl Ernst Georges has been processed. It appeared - with a slightly different title - in new editions, most recently in 2013.
In 1964 the Neue Deutsche Biographie referred to it as “still [...] an indispensable standard work to this day”.
history
overview
The dictionary first appeared in 1826 (for the history see: Latin-German and German-Latin hand lexicon - note the terminological nuance “hand lexicon” versus “hand dictionary”!).
After 1862 the title was preceded by the adjective detailed , but Georges remained the editor and the number of editions continued.
Another turning point in the history of the dictionary came with the death of Karl Ernst Georges (1895). It then took almost a quarter of a century from the seventh edition (under the aegis of Georges) 1879–1882 until the younger of his two sons, Heinrich Georges , brought out an eighth edition in 1913 - albeit exclusively of the Latin-German part - with which the old title now became obsolete. Another revision of the Latin-German part - criticized from various quarters - appeared a hundred years later, in 2013.
1826: From the "hand dictionary primarily for schools" to the "hand dictionary"
In 1826 Lünemann took on the new title Georg Heinr. Lünemann's Latin-German and German-Latin concise dictionary. Imm [anuel] Joh [ann] Gerh [ard] Scheller's layout reworked .
Until then, the dictionary was last known as Imm. Joh. Gerh. Scheller's Latin-German and German-Latin hand lexicon [written before 1822 with "c" - instead of "k"], especially for schools, revised, improved and increased by G. H. Lünemann .
1831: First edition after Lünemann's death
Lünemann did not see the next edition; he died in 1830. By then he had edited the keywords up to the first letter "S- / s-". Karl Ernst Georges (when he was around 22 years old) started working on the dictionary as early as 1828.
The new edition then appeared in 1831, anticipated and quasi-edited - even if not expressly designated as the editor - by Georg Friedrich Grotefend , the decipherer of the cuneiform script . Georges is not mentioned by name in the Latin-German part of the dictionary; in fact, until Lünemann's death, Georges was mainly restricted to proofreading and adding additions that were put in brackets.
Even Georges himself later counted the next edition of the Latin-German part, which appeared in 1837/38, as his first own.
In contrast, Georges was able to publish the first volume of the German-Latin part under his name as early as 1831; The second volume followed in 1833; with this work he became Dr. phil. PhD ..
1837: Karl Ernst Georges also appears by name in the Latin-German section
In 1837 ( A – J ) and 1838 ( K – Z ) the above was published. next edition of the Latin-German part, which now identified Georges as the editor. In 1839 the next edition of the German-Latin part took place.
1861: Last edition under the old title
After several further editions, the last edition followed in 1861/1862 without the addition of detailed information in the book title.
1879–1882: Last edition during the lifetime of Karl Ernst Georges
The second edition with the title addition Detailed and at the same time the last edition with both a Latin-German and a German-Latin part appeared in 1879/1880.
The further history of the work (from 1913) is therefore presented under the separate lemma Detailed Latin-German concise dictionary .

Note: Only the Latin-German parts are taken into account. The superscript numbers indicate the respective edition. As far as two numbers are superscripted, the first concerns all editions processed by Lünemann and Georges and the second the editions for which Georges was specifically responsible. In fact, the editions of the concise dictionary that have been described as detailed are significantly more extensive than the previous ones - without, however , affecting the size of the third edition of Immanuel Johann Gerhard Scheller's detailed and as complete as possible Latin-German lexicon or dictionary from 1804 (over 12,000 Columns; that is, over 6,000 pages).

Note: In the German-Latin part, Georges never continued the Lünemannian edition count; in Latin and German part he had them since the introduction of Title additive Detailed away. The edition numbers not mentioned in the print are put in square brackets in the table. Sources: For the years of publication 1831, 1837–39, 1861/62 and 1879–82: as stated in the footnotes to the article text or to Table 1; for the rest of the information see Richard Wolf.
For the German-Latin part from 1843 see: Volume 1 in the Text Archive - Internet Archive and Volume 2 in the Text Archive - Internet Archive (Wolf says, however: "1845 [or 1843?]").
Note
The individual volumes are not always preceded by a title page for the complete work. Together with the fact that both parts were also referred to individually as Latin-German and German-Latin concise dictionary - i.e. not always recognizable as parts of the overall work - misunderstandings can easily arise.
