Latvijas Mobilais Telefons (LMT) is a Latvian mobile phone operator that operates in the GSM , UMTS and LTE networks.

LMT was founded on January 2nd, 1992. It was the first mobile communications company in Latvia and established itself as a provider of the NMT system. In 1995 the company also started operating in the GSM network. Following the results of market research, LMT applied for a license to expand the 1800 MHz frequency, which was granted in the summer of 1999. On December 1, 1999 there were 14 active GSM 900/1800 cell towers , and eleven more should be completed by the turn of the millennium.

On April 3, 2000, LMT announced that it would partner with Hansabank to launch the nation's first mobile banking application . This enabled the user, for example, to check exchange rates, check the account balance and sales, and receive text messages informing about account activities. The account holder could choose how often to receive notifications, ranging from monthly to after each activity. At the same time, plans were announced to enable payments via mobile banking, which was not yet possible at the beginning.

In November 2000 LMT started a prepaid service called "OKarte". The cooperation with Hansabank was continued and expanded to include the option of topping up prepaid accounts directly from a Hansabank ATM. The prepaid service was merged with the LMT branding on October 7, 2013 and renamed LMT Okarte.

LMT announced in January 2002 that it would discontinue NMT network support by the end of the year, and in the same year began to introduce the GPRS standard. In September 2002 GPRS was already available all over Latvia. As the next step in its expansion, LMT introduced MMS support on March 31, 2003. After acquiring the license, the commercial UMTS network was launched in December 2004. In June 2005, LMT introduced EDGE in Riga and Jurmala . HSDPA followed in August 2006.

In partnership with TeliaSonera , LMT began selling the iPhone in Latvia on September 26, 2008 .

The LTE network went into operation on May 31, 2011, but was initially not available to mobile customers. The first city-wide availability of this network in Latvia was in Liepaja in July 2012 and, thanks to ongoing network development, it was made available to mobile customers on November 5, 2013. As of April 2014, 50 percent of Latvians had access to the LTE network, with the aim of full coverage of the whole country, including the very rural areas, by 2016.

In April 2013, LMT started the "LMT for Latvia" (LMT Latvijai) project - a nationwide CSR initiative, in cooperation with local communities and residents of various Latvian villages and towns. The initiative subsequently started various social projects. Including z. B. new children's playgrounds and modernized libraries in Preili , outdoor fitness equipment in Tukums , the purchase of binoculars for bird watching in the Sātiņi nature reserve or a youth festival in Saldus . In 2014, 88 ideas were submitted in eleven Latvian villages and cities, 32 were selected for implementation. More than 28,000 people took part in the vote and the initiative was covered in over 200 press releases. The winners of the competition were each donated between 500 and 2000 euros. LMT donated a total of € 64,000.

As of June 2014, LMT had roaming agreements for voice calls and text messages with 446 mobile phone providers in 204 countries in Europe , Africa , Asia , Oceania and America , as well as with marine and satellite communication networks. The mobile data agreements amounted to 372 providers in 171 countries.

LMT is now Latvia's largest telecommunications provider, with 1,113,197 customers at the beginning of 2015, an increase of 30,000 compared to the previous year.

Products

While mobile phone contracts with a term are still the company's main product, there are various prepaid offers as well as a selection of data contracts for tablets and computers. In June 2014, three different Internet levels with an unlimited amount of data were available for households, whereby the top level did not contain any speed reduction.

Events

LMT has been the main sponsor of the LMT Smart Future Conference since 2016. According to its own statement, the main aim of this conference is to bring together experts from a wide variety of industries and sectors at VEF Kulturas pils in Riga. Speakers included the Latvian Minister of Culture Dace Melbarde , the journalist Ilze Jaunalksne and Emojipedia founder Jeremy Burge.
