Laura Arraya (born January 12, 1964 in Cordoba , Argentina ) is a former Peruvian tennis player . From 1984 she was married to her trainer Heinz Gildemeister , a former Chilean tennis professional, and took his family name. After the divorce, she ran again under her maiden name.

Career

When Laura Arraya was seven, her family moved from Argentina to Peru; she became a Peruvian citizen.

Between 1981 and 1993 Arraya played 34 Grand Slam tournaments ; her best performance was the move into the quarterfinals of Wimbledon in 1991, which she lost to Gabriela Sabatini smoothly.

Arraya was able to win four tournaments in her professional career in singles: 1982 in Tokyo , 1984 Miami , 1989 Schenectady and San Juan ) and one in doubles (1987 Charleston , together with Tine Scheuer from Denmark .

In the Federation Cup between 1982 and 1993 she was appointed to the Peruvian team 16 times . Of her total of 28 games, she won twelve in four lost games; in doubles there are five wins against seven defeats.

When tennis was a demonstration sport at the 1984 Olympic Games , Arraya played for Peru; she lost her first round match against Renata Sasak from Yugoslavia 6: 1, 1: 6, 1: 6.

Her mother Alcira Arraya also played tennis at a very high level, she was number 2 in the Argentine rankings. Laura's brother Pablo Arraya was also a professional tennis player. Laura Arraya now runs a tennis school in Lima .
