Laura Hillenbrand (born May 15, 1967 in Fairfax , Virginia ) is an American writer .

Life

Laura Hillenbrand was born in Fairfax in 1967 and grew up on her father's ranch in Sharpsburg , Maryland . In her youth she wrote her first articles on history and horse racing . She studied at Kenyon College in Gambier , Ohio . Meanwhile, she developed chronic fatigue syndrome and turned to writing. Her essays have appeared in publications such as The New Yorker , The New York Times , The Washington Post , Los Angeles Times , American Heritage , USA Today, and Reader's Digest .

In 2001 her first non-fiction book about the racehorse Seabiscuit was published . It stayed on the New York Times bestseller list for 42 weeks and later became a bestseller worldwide. The book was from 2003 Gary Ross filmed . Together with actor Gary Sinise , Hillenbrand founded the non-profit organization Operation International Children in 2004 .

Her second book Unbeugsam , a biography of Olympian and war hero Louis Zamperini , was published in 2010. The film adaptation of the work by Angelina Jolie was released on December 25, 2014 under the title Unbroken in US cinemas. The German theatrical release was on January 15, 2015.

Hillenbrand lives in Washington, DC
