from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Lavdrim Muhaxheri (born March 12, 1989 in Kačanik , socialist Yugoslavia , today Kosovo ; † June 8, 2017 in Syria ) was a Kosovar-Albanian Islamist terrorist. He had been a member of the jihadist - Salafist terrorist organization Islamic State (IS) since 2013 and was responsible for dozens of hostage-taking , beheadings and murders , including the killing of a prisoner in Deir ez-Zor, Syria, with an RPG-7 , as well as for the recruitment of other IS fighters . Muhaxheri was the leader of the IS fighters with a Kosovar Albanian background and was last seen as the most prominent activist who acted as a link between IS and ethnic Albanians from Albania , Kosovo and Macedonia ; he was considered a figurehead among the Albanian-born IS fighters.

Muhaxheri gained notoriety in July 2014, especially in Southeastern Europe, when photos were published showing him beheading a teenager . Muhaxheri explained his act in an interview with a daily newspaper from the Albanian capital Tirana in August 2014, justifying his act on the fact that he suspected the teenager of being a spy and that he had done nothing other than the members of the Albanian paramilitary organization UÇK during the Kosovo war . In the same year, Muhaxheri once again shocked the public when he posted pictures on what was then his Facebook page showing him beheading Syrian soldiers. He was seen as extremely violent and someone who likes to brag about his atrocities on the Internet . One video was shown beheading a prisoner in Iraq . He is also said to have dreamed of establishing an IS-model caliphate in Kosovo .

According to Interpol , Muhaxheri was under criminal prosecution by the judicial authorities of the United Nations Interim Administration Mission in Kosovo (UNMIK) for inciting the commission of a terrorist offense , organizing and participating in a terrorist group , and inciting national, racial, religious or ethnic hatred of Discord and intolerance . Muhaxheri had worked for the United States Army until 2012, first at Camp Bondsteel and then in Afghanistan . In 2012 he founded an Islamist youth group in his hometown on the border with Macedonia and then traveled to Syria.

In November 2016, he planned an attack on the Israeli national soccer team .

In December 2016, there were warnings from Italian intelligence circles that Muhaxheri had fled Syria with up to 400 IS fighters and came to Europe.

He died on June 8, 2017, presumably as a result of an air strike by US forces.
