The Lavender pasture or gray willow ( Salix eleagnos , also as S. elaeagnos written) is a plant from the genus of willow ( Salix ).
description
Salix eleagnos is a tree or shrub that reaches heights of growth of up to 20 meters. The alternate leaves are similar to those of the basket willow , but are slightly smaller than this one. The leaf blades are narrowly lanceolate, wavy and usually entire with a length of only up to 12 centimeters. The leaves of the lavender willow are often finely sawn towards the tip. The underside of the leaf is hairy gray to white tomentose, but not shimmering (see identification information)!
The lavender willow has two separate sexes ( diocesan ). The inflorescences appear in April to May, shortly before or with the leaves shoot. The slender, mostly curved kittens are 3 to 5 inches long.
The number of chromosomes is 2n = 38.
Determination note
In contrast to the wicker willow , the hairs on the underside of the leaves of the lavender willow are criss-crossed into a dense, dull felt ( indument ).
Occurrence
The lavender willow is found in the mountains of Central and Southern Europe and in Asia Minor .
Salix eleagnos thrives best on damp to dry, mostly calcareous soils on banks and gravel banks of mountain and foothills rivers. It also occurs on damp, marly, slippery slopes. In Central Europe it is a character species of Salicetum elaeagni from the Salicion elaeagni association, but also occurs as a developmental relict in societies of the Erico-Pinion associations or in the Salici-Hippophaetum rhmanoidis of the Berberidion association. In the Allgäu Alps it rises up to 1600 meters above sea level.
