Lavinia Meijer (born February 12, 1983 in South Korea ) is an internationally performing Dutch harpist .

education

Meijer was admitted to study in the youth department at the Utrecht Conservatory by Erika Waardenburg at the age of 11 . In 2003 she completed her studies there “ cum laude ”. In 2005, she obtained her master's degree in music from the Conservatorium van Amsterdam, also “cum laude”.

Meijer studied with Jana Bouskova, Isabelle Moretti, Daphne Boden, Natalia Shameyva, Emilia Moskvitina, Maria Graf, Skaila Kanga and Susann McDonald, among others. She also took a jazz course from jazz harpist Park Stickney and took lessons in interpretation from Theo Olof ( violin ), Walter van Hauwe ( recorder ) and Willem Brons ( piano ).

In addition to studying the standard repertoire for harp, she attended master classes with musicians of other instruments, e.g. B. with Willem Brons, Anner Bylsma , Theo Olof and Ton Koopman ( harpsichord ).

In 2004 Meijer toured the Netherlands with the Jenufa Quartet in the Het Debuut series . In the years 2006 to 2008 she performed in concerts of the Rising Stars series in addition to the Concertgebouw Amsterdam also abroad, for example in the Philharmonie Köln , the Wiener Musikverein , the Symphony Hall Birmingham , the Paris Cité-de-la-Musique, the Athenians Concert Hall, the Brussels Paleis voor schone kunsten, the Philharmonie Luxembourg , the Stockholm Konserthus and the New York Carnegie Hall . In 2006 she played new transcriptions of Caplet , Debussy and Ravel with the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet , as well as two world premieres by the Argentine composer Carlos Michans and the Dutch composer Wijnand van Klaveren, who both composed new music especially for her and the Aurelia Saxophone Quartet . In 2007 Meijer and Tjeerd Top (violin) gave a world premiere by the American composer Garrett Byrnes at the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam . In 2007 she also played another world premiere piece by Carlos Michans in Vredenburg, Utrecht, together with the Radio Chamber Philharmony under the direction of Thierry Fischer. In December she finally accepted a concert invitation from Carnegie Hall to make her solo debut in New York .

Meijer has performed in Europe, Asia and North America, where she played as a soloist with orchestras such as the Residentie Orkest, the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra of the SWR , the Radio Chamber Orchestra and the Israel Philharmonic Orchestra . She has also been invited to festivals such as the Amsterdam Canal Festival , the Schleswig-Holstein Music Festival and a number of world harp conferences.

She is a regular replacement as a harpist in various orchestras, including the Residentie Orkest and the Concertgebouw Orchestra , and has appeared with renowned orchestras on several radio programs and television programs.

Her broad interest then led her to jazz , pop music and modern classics of minimal music . In 2012 she released an album of works by Philip Glass , which she transcribed for harp and which has been approved by Glass. The album immediately rose to the top of the Dutch rock charts and Meijer often plays these pieces at acoustic concerts by candlelight.

Finally, in 2014, Meijer released her first album Passaggio on a major record label (Sony Classical Records) , which consists of pieces by the Italian composer / pianist Ludovico Einaudi , met with widespread positive reviews and became number one on the iTunes Classical Charts.
