Laway is a folk formation that has been active since 1979, with a changing line-up , which has made a name for itself in the Low German dialect . She has become more well-known because she has been writing the music for the Störtebeker open-air theater in Marienhafe since 1996 and performing it live at the performances.

Band history

The name Laway goes back to the strikes of the dike workers on the North Sea in the 18th and 19th centuries and means "noise" in Low German. Laway was founded in 1979 by Gerd "Ballou" Brandt (* 1954 in Holtermoor) and Wolfgang Höfer in Jever . Other band members at the time were Holger Kaiser (later: Ballermann) and Peter Voltin.

Her first LP Laat jo nich unnerkriegen was released in 1982 and was awarded the German Record Critics' Prize in 1983 . The album cover was handcrafted, a photo was glued to the cover, and an A4 songbook was attached. In 1985 the folk band was awarded a prize at the festival “Menschen und Meer” and in 1990 represented the NDR at the EBU Folk Festival. Following the album, the band toured Germany and neighboring countries. A slide show supported the band's visual presence and ensured that the band's lyrics were better understood.

From 1990 to 1996 the band was on hold. Gerd Brandt founded the ARTyCHOKE label, which not only publishes folk music, but also church music and songwriters .

Since 1996 there has been a fairly stable line-up around Brandt, Petra Fuchs and Jörg Fröse, who have released nine albums to date. This includes five albums with the soundtrack of the Störtebeker open-air theater. In 2002, 2005 and 2008 the band played live there in front of around 24,000 spectators.

In 2002 Laway was a guest on the anniversary program Talk op Platt on N3. In the following years, the band appeared several times on this talk show . She was then able to place herself on nationwide TV and appeared on ZDF . In 2003 the group was awarded the Bad Bevensen Prize , which is often referred to as the “Low German Grammy”. In 2006 Laway contributed the music to the open-air theater play Dusend Dalers , which was performed in Oldersum in 2006 , and performed it live at the performances. In June 2009 Laway was involved in the production “Törf un Strom” at the open-air theater in Wiesmoor . In July / August 2010 Laway was responsible for the musical design of the open-air revue "Barkhahn un Blitz (Black Cock and Blitz)".

Music genre

The East Frisian group mainly plays modern folk music with mostly Low German lyrics. The musicians use the traditional folk song fund, but also write new songs. The repertoire also includes traditional folk dance music. The texts mainly deal with the topics of the coast and the life of people by and on the sea. In addition to the usual, more historical topics such as Klaus Störtebeker and seafaring, the songs deal with current environmental issues such as wind energy and oil pollution . Furthermore, the music style develops with the occupation group. The records “Freje Wind” and “Hartleed”, for example, are heavily influenced by Herbert Bartmann's bagpipe.
