Lawrence Gowing
Sir Lawrence Burnett Gowing (born April 21, 1918 in Stoke Newington , London , † February 5, 1991 in London) was a British painter and art historian .
biography
After attending school, Lawrence Gowing studied painting at Euston Road School with William Coldstream . His best-known painting before World War II was “Mare Street, Hackney” from 1937. He used his painting style, which was influenced by Impressionism , in portraits in particular, such as in 1944 in the portrait "Mrs Roberts".
In 1948 he was appointed professor of fine arts at the University of Durham , where he worked until 1958. At the same time he was rector of the King Edward VII School of Art in Newcastle upon Tyne . In 1958 he was appointed principal of the Chelsea School of Art , whose director he remained until 1965. In 1967 Gowing was appointed professor of fine arts at the University of Leeds , where he taught until his appointment in 1975 as professor at the Slade School of Fine Art at University College London . After ten years there, he retired in 1985. In 1982 he was knighted as a Knight Bachelor , and in 1989 he was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences .
