Bazin was born in 1901 as the son of engineers Charles Bazin and Jeanne Laurence Mounier-Pouthot. He studied art history at the Sorbonne in Paris under Henri Focillon and Émile Mâle , among others , and museology at the École du Louvre. From 1928 he worked in the graphics department of the Paris École des Beaux Arts, which in 1937 led to his appointment as curator in the graphics department of the Louvre. His supervisor René Huyghe awakened his interest and awareness of the importance of restoration, which Bazin constantly sought to professionalize during his time at the Louvre. In 1934 he was also a professor at the Université Libre de Bruxellesbeen appointed; he should hold the position for over 30 years.

In World War II he served from 1939 to 1940 in the infantry and rose to captain on in the following years, he was, along with René Huyghe and Jacques Jaujard , involved in the works of the French museums during the occupation before the Nazis to hide. At the same time, in 1941, he was appointed professor of museology at the École du Louvre . During the war years he published works on such different eras and artists as Hans Memling (1939), Fra Angelico (1941) and Camille Corot (1942). As one of the first European art historians, Bazin became interested in the Brazilian Baroque from 1945. In the following years he published two fundamental works on religious architecture (1956/58) and on the sculptor Aleijadinho (1963).

In 1947 Bazin married Suzanne Comtesse Heller Bielotzerkowka. After managing the graphics department of the Louvre Museum for a few years, he was appointed chief curator for painting and graphics in 1951, and in 1965 he was appointed chief curator of the restoration workshops of the Musées nationaux , which had been created especially for him. He advocated a new hanging of the works that should reflect the breadth of the collection of objects from all over the world. He has also published numerous works on various topics, including a history of art of all times and peoples (1953), as well as monographs on impressionism (1947) and the art of baroque and rococo (1964).
