Lawrence Masha

Lawrence Kego Masha (born March 11, 1970 ) is a Tanzanian politician of the Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM), who was Interior Minister between 2008 and 2010.

Life

Masha attended the New Rochelle Academy Primary from 1976 to 1981 and the New Rochelle Academy High School between 1981 and 1986 and then began studying law at the University of Dar es Salaam (UDSM) in 1987, which he obtained in 1991 with a Bachelor of Laws (LL.B. Hons) finished. He then worked as a legal assistant at the International Law Chambers between 1991 and 1995 . A postgraduate law degree at Georgetown University , which he started at the same time in 1992 , he completed in 1993 with a Master of Laws (LL.M.). Between 1995 and 1997 he was a legal assistant at the law firm Maajar, Ruspungura Law Office and, after being admitted to the bar in 1997, became a partner at the law firm IMMMA Advocates . In addition, he was Executive Director and Company Secretary of Tanzania Oxygen Limited between 1997 and 2000 .

Masha began his political career within the CCM Revolutionary Party ( Chama Cha Mapinduzi ) and from 2002 to 2005 was the youth secretary of Kawe, which belongs to the Kinondoni district of Dar es Salaam . At the same time, in 2003 he was Secretary General of the National Youth Association UVCCM and a member of the National Council of the UVCCM. In 2005 he was elected a member of the National Assembly for the CCM , in which he represented the Nyamagana constituency until 2015 . After briefly serving as Vice Minister for Energy and Mineral Resources in 2006, he served as Vice Minister for Interior between 2006 and 2008. On February 13, 2008, he took over the post of Minister of the Interior as the successor to Joseph Mungai as part of a new government formation in Prime Minister Mizengo Pinda's cabinet . As part of this government formation, Hussein Mwinyi became defense minister and Mustafa Mkulo became finance minister, while Bernard Membe remained foreign minister. He held the post of interior minister until November 24, 2010, after which Shamsi Vuai Nahodha , whose post as chief minister of Zanzibar had been abolished , became his successor .

Masha then resumed his practice as a lawyer and partner at IMMMA Advocates . In 2010 he was named Tanzania's first Young Global Leader by the World Economic Forum . Since 2013 he is among others CEO of Tanga Cement Public Company Limited and member of the supervisory board of the airline FastJet Airlines Ltd . In 2015 he became co-founder and managing partner of the law firm Gabriel & Co. Attorneys at Law .
