Lawrence Stone
Lawrence Stone ( December 4, 1919 - June 16, 1999 ) was an English historian .
Stone was born in Epsom , Surrey , in the south of England in 1919 .
He attended the Charterhouse School from 1933 to 1938 and then studied at the Sorbonne (1938) and Oxford (1939-40 and 45-46). During World War II , Stone served as a volunteer in the Royal Navy reserves .
From 1947 to 1963 Stone Fellow was at University College, Oxford , then until 1990 professor at the US Ivy League University Princeton . He was elected to the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in 1968 , to the American Philosophical Society in 1970 and a corresponding member of the British Academy in 1983.
His son is the documentary filmmaker Robert Stone.
Stone published books on the social history (also the history of mentality ) of England in the early modern period ; while z. B. on the elites of England ( "An Open Elite? England 1540-1880" (1984)). Another focus was on the history of family and divorce in England from around 1500 to the 20th century.
He took a strictly descriptive - narrative view of historiography , with a focus on human history, not abstract circumstances; on the particular and specific instead of the collective and statistical . In doing so, he often combined historical with anthropological methods and approaches.
