The Le Sueur River drains an area of 2280 km² and is an indirect tributary of the Mississippi River via the Blue Earth River and the Minnesota River .

Run

The river has its source in Hartland Township in northwest Freeborn County and flows initially northward through the extreme southwest of Steele County into Waseca County and then westward in a winding course to Blue Earth County . He passes the city of St. Clair . It flows into the Blue Earth River southwest of Mankato , only about 5 km above the mouth of the Blue Earth River in the Minnesota River. The largest tributaries are the Cobb River and Maple River , which flow from the south about 10 km and 13 km above the mouth, respectively. Another tributary of the Le Sueur River is the Little Le Sueur River , which flows into the Le Sueur River in Waseca County.

The greater part of its course of the river Le Sueur flows on ground moraine plains and the area of a former glacial lake . The foothills of the Big Woods , an area with hardwood vegetation that has since been largely converted into agricultural land, originally formed the edge of the river on the way south. About 84% of the catchment area of the Blue Earth River is used for agriculture, mostly through the cultivation of corn and soybeans .

Flow rate

The United States Geological Survey maintains a water level near Rapidan Township , about 2 miles above the river mouth. The long-term average between 1940 and 2005 was 16 m³ / s. The highest value was measured on April 8, 1965 with 699 m³ / s, the lowest was almost 0 m³ / s on February 9, 1959.
