The Lebanese University (UL; French Université Libanaise ; Arabic الجامعة اللبنانية) is a university in Beirut . The university, founded in 1951, is the only state institution of its kind in Lebanon . It is divided into 16 faculties.

history

Until 1975, all faculties of the university were in Beirut or the immediate vicinity. In 1976, due to the Lebanese civil war , new departments were established. In addition to Beirut, these were also located in the Lebanon Mountains , in the Governorate of North Lebanon , in South Lebanon and in the Bekaa Plain . This became necessary because during the civil war it was almost impossible or difficult to travel within Lebanon.

The President's office and the main administrative offices are located in Beirut, opposite the National Museum .

On January 30, 2018, Frank-Walter Steinmeier gave a speech at the UL on the occasion of his state visit to Lebanon, which awarded him an honorary doctorate.
