Leegmeer has been part of the city of Emmerich am Rhein in North Rhine-Westphalia since it was incorporated in 1903 . Leegmeer is northeast of the old town . To the north of Leegmeer is the Speelberg district and to the east is the Klein-Netterden district .
Until the Congress of Vienna , Leegmeer was Dutch territory. In 1816 it was added to Prussia . On December 1, 1885, there were 24 residential buildings with 82 residents in Leegmeer.
In the center of Leegmeer is the Heilig-Geist-Kirche , a modern church built in the 1960s - central building made of concrete , with a large cross made of scrap and informal wall design. This extraordinary sacred building by Dieter Georg Baumewerd , cross and two-part altar by Waldemar Kuhn as well as interior design and non-representational Stations of the Cross by Fred Thieler reflect the modernization of the Catholic Church at the time of the Second Vatican Council .
In addition to the Heilig-Geist-Kirche, the municipal cemetery and the Jewish cemetery are among the architectural monuments in Leegmeer.
The Yezidi cultural community also has its headquarters and assembly hall in Leegmeer .
The headquarters and the production facilities of the Katjes company (sweets and liquorice) are located in Leegmeer.
In local public transport (ÖPNV), the citizens' bus (10 times a day) connects Leegmeer with the city center. Since the timetable change in December 2012, no public bus has been running via Leegmeer; Until then, the 92 bus ran every two hours.
There is a Catholic kindergarten with five groups and a three-class Catholic primary school .
