Robert Moses "Lefty" Grove (born March 6, 1900 in Lonaconing , Maryland , † May 22, 1975 in Norwalk , Ohio ) was an American baseball player in Major League Baseball .

biography

Lefty Grove grew up in Maryland and began his career with the Baltimore Orioles in minor league baseball . Grove was a great pitcher with the Orioles, but since the Orioles were an independent team that wasn't a subsidiary of a major league team, they didn't have to give up their starpitcher . It wasn't until 1925 that Jack Dunn , the owner of the Orioles, agreed to sell Grove to the Philadelphia Athletics . The Athletics paid $ 106,000 for the rights, the highest amount ever paid for a player.

He made his debut in the American League on April 14, 1925 with Mickey Cochrane . In his first season he struggled with injuries and only came up with a record of ten wins and thirteen losses. In 1926 he then won the first of nine titles for the player with the lowest ERA of 2.51. In 1927 he achieved twenty wins in one season for the first time. He had his most outstanding years from 1929 to 1931. During these years, the Athletics won the championship in the American League three times in a row. Grove was primarily involved in this with 20, 28 and 31 wins. In 1931 he led the AL in six pitcher categories and was elected MVP of his league. After 1930, he won his second Triple Crown that year . In 1929 and 1930 the Athletics were able to prevail against the Chicago Cubs and the St. Louis Cardinals , in 1931 they were defeated by the Cardinals.

Due to financial problems Connie Mack sold Lefty Grove in 1933 to the Boston Red Sox . There he still showed good performances, but not as outstanding as in the Athletics. In 1941 he ended his career with 300 wins and 141 losses.

In 1947, Grove was inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame . He died in 1975 at the age of 75.
