Legend is a New Wave of British Heavy Metal and Progressive Rock band from Jersey that was formed in 1980, disbanded in 1984 and has been active again since 2002.

history

The band was founded in August 1980 by guitarist Peter Haworth. The band also consisted of the singer Mike Lezala, the guitarist Marco Morosino, the bassist Eggy Aubert and the drummer David Whitley. In the following years the band mainly rehearsed and wrote new songs. Initially, the band was hardly active live, although they had their first appearance at the end of the year. Her self-titled debut album followed in July 1981 on her own label Workshop Records. Some songs from the album could also be heard on the Friday Rock Show . In addition, the band now held more concerts and also appeared as the opening act for Thin Lizzy . Later that year, guitarist Marco Morosino left the cast to enter college . A replacement followed briefly; however, since the band was not successful with this, the line-up shrank from quintet to quartet. In July 1982 the second album Death in the Nursery followed on from Workshop Records. Towards the end of 1982 the band recorded four more new songs and released them as an EP. In 1983 the band worked on their third album, which was never to be released, although six songs were already ready. Bassist Eggy Aubert left the band due to an injury, which is why a tour had to be canceled. Neil Haworth, brother of guitarist Peter Haworth, came as a replacement for a short time. In early 1984, singer Mike Lezala left the band. The other members then decided to break up the band. For a final farewell concert in the London Marquee Club in January 1984 Lezala came back to the band. At the concert, Lemmy Kilmister had his Death In the Nursery album signed . After the breakup, Peter and Neil Haworth each released a solo album. In 1998 Peter Haworth put together the compilation Retroshock 1981-1984 , which included songs from his creative period. In addition, Questions and Answers, a previously unreleased song, could be heard. In 2001 and 2002 Haworth put together a compilation called Anthology , which was released in 2002, the sound carrier also containing rare demo recordings, among other things. Due to the positive feedback, it was decided to reactivate the band and the next two albums followed with Still Screaming (2004) and The Dark Place (2013). In 2013 the band also appeared on the Keep It True .

style

According to Malc Macmillan in The NWOBHM Encyclopedia, the self-titled debut album is reminiscent of groups like Bleak House , Chasar , Omega and Triarchy . On Death in the Nursery the songs are much shorter and there are more upbeat songs. According to Matthis Mader, the first two albums and the first EP would skillfully combine hard guitar riffs with melodic song structures. The EP offers a mixture of the classic NWoBHM sound and progressive rock . Boris Kaiser let the rock-hard readers know that it was 1970s rock with Prog elements. Martin Popoff , in his book The Collector's Guide of Heavy Metal Volume 2: The Eighties, described Lezala's vocals on Legend as interesting and competent, while the songs were dark and progressive. He found the music to be a mixture of Demon , Saracen , Nightwing and Witchfynde . On Death in the Nursery he heard the influence of groups like Pentagram , High Tide , Blue Cheer , Bang , Saracen, Hollow Ground , Crucifixion , Holocaust , Gaskin , Paralex , Angel Witch and Nightwing. In the rock-hard interview, Peter Haworth stated, strongly through artists such as Jimi Hendrix , Hawkwind , Black Sabbath , Deep Purple , Budgie , Frank Zappa , King Crimson , Rush , Kim Mitchell and Frank Marino , but also through Frédéric Chopin and Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart to have been influenced. While the songs on Still Screaming were mostly positive, on The Dark Place it was rather the opposite. Songs like Burn with Your Demons would cover topics like the recent child abuse scandals in England.
