The city was founded in 1983 and is a satellite city of Beer Sheva . The distance to Beersheba is 12 km. It is located on the main road from Tel Aviv to Beer Sheva at an intersection with the road to Arad and Rahat . The Bedouin town of Rahat is 4 km to the west.

On June 23, 2007, a new train station was inaugurated in Lehawim on the Kiryat Gat – Beersheba line.

The character of the village is shaped by single-family houses; the socio-cultural level of the residents is high. Lehawim is one of the ten wealthiest communities in Israel.

The city lies in the semi-desert transition zone of the Negev, and the grazing of the surrounding fields is of major economic importance to the neighboring Bedouins.

Most of the residents of Lehawim are former residents of Be'er Sheva and mostly continue to work in the nearby central city.
