The Leitenbach , also Leithenbach , is a river in the Upper Austrian Inn and Hausruckviertel and a left tributary of the Aschach .

course

The Leitenbach rises on the south-eastern slopes of the Sauwald forest and initially flows with a high gradient in a south-easterly direction until it reaches a wide, flat plateau below the village of Landertsberg, which it crosses with a very low gradient. Then it flows through the Leithental , a steep breakthrough valley around 2.5 km in length. Then it again runs through a relatively flat area, initially strongly meandering through the Koaserin , a flood area, underneath strongly straightened to the confluence with the Aschach.

Catchment area and water supply

The natural catchment area of the Leitenbach is almost 75 km², which is the largest sub-catchment area of the Aschach system. The highest point in it measures 652  m above sea level. A.

The mean discharge at the Knotzberg gauge, 10.2 km above the mouth, is 0.84 m³ / s, which corresponds to a discharge rate of 17.4 l / (s · km²). The Leitenbach shows a clear winter pluvial runoff regime . The highest runoff occurs in the winter months with the highest monthly mean of 1.68 m³ / s in March. In the water-poorest months of July and August, the mean discharge of 0.53 m³ / s is around a third of this.

ecology

The Leitenbach has been hard straightened over long stretches, the banks and partly also the bottom are paved. The stream flows there through intensively used meadow and farmland, there are hardly any wood along the banks, if it is then mostly a gappy, low-growing shrubbery made of ear or gray willow . The river continuum is interrupted by numerous transverse structures. Apart from a few hundred meters on the upper reaches, only the Leithen and Koaserin areas are relatively close to nature . In the Leithen there is a well-preserved mixed forest (Aceri-Fraxinetum), which is characterized in the tree layer by sycamore and ash , further by summer and winter linden and sycamore elm . The Koaserin is a protected wetland area that can absorb a lot of water when it is flooded. In this area, the Leitenbach has a strong meander formation and a relatively slow flow rate. The lower reaches where it flows into the Aschach was renatured over a length of 780 m.

The Leitenbach has water quality class II throughout its course .

In the Leitenbach there are populations of the noble crayfish , the river pearl mussel , and the common river mussel , which is very rare in Upper Austria . The green wedge damsel , threatened with extinction in Upper Austria , was also found in the Leitenbach. The Koaserin provides a habitat for numerous, including many endangered, animal and plant species; 265 fern and flowering plants and 86 different bird species have been found there.
