Leo Gabriel (philosopher)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Leo Gabriel (born September 11, 1902 in Vienna ; † February 15, 1987 ibid) was an Austrian philosopher, known for his integrative-holistic thinking and his promotion of dialogue between Christians and Marxists.

life and work

Leo Gabriel was born in Vienna in 1902. He graduated from high school in Graz and studied in Innsbruck with Alois Gatterer , then in Vienna with Heinrich Gomperz . Here his thinking was particularly stimulated by the encounter with Moritz Schlick . In April 1929 Gabriel joined the KÖHV Nordgau Wien . From 1932 to 1948 he worked as a grammar school teacher for philosophy and history, during the time of the corporate state also in the Volksheim Ottakring , although his role in this institution is viewed very critically today. In 1947 he completed his habilitation in philosophy with Alois Dempf and became a lecturer at the University of Vienna, where he became associate professor in 1950 and full professor in 1951. Contrary to a different claim by Renate Lotz-Rimbach, he was not the rector of this university: the author mistook him for the theologian Johannes Gabriel. In 1965 his main work, the "Integral Logic" appeared.

In 1968 Leo Gabriel was President of the XIV International Congress of Philosophy, which was held in Vienna. In 1972 he retired, in 1973 he was President of the XV. International Congress of Philosophy in Varna . These two philosophical conferences were important places for the international dialogue between West and East, which was then continued by the University Center for Peace Research under Rudolf Weiler . According to the judgment of some reform communists of the time of change, the holistic-logical thinking of Leo Gabriel played an important role for the emergence of glasnost and perestroika as well as for the change in the eastern states. In 1987 Leo Gabriel died in Vienna at the age of 85.

Proximity to fascism

Leo Gabriel is sometimes very critical of the proximity to arch-conservative Catholicism on the one hand and to fascism - especially to Austrofascism - on the other. This happens consistently due to his publications and his work, especially in the corporate state of Austria between 1933 and 1938, in the vicinity of Oswald Menghin . He enrolled at the University of Vienna with information on his mother tongue “German” and ethnicityAryan ”.

Leo Gabriel jun.

His son, Leo Gabriel jun. , is regarded as a connoisseur of Latin America, leftist, journalist, co-initiator of the Austrian Social Forum, who as a supporter of the Palestinians is often controversial and critical of the Middle East , Palestine and Israel.
