Leonard Anthony Boyle

Leonard Anthony Boyle (born November 30, 1930 in Nightcaps , † June 1, 2016 in Dunedin ) was a New Zealand clergyman and Bishop of Dunedin .

Life

Leonard Boyle studied philosophy and Catholic theology at the seminaries in Christchurch and Mosgiel . He was ordained priestly in Winston on June 29, 1961 by the Bishop of Dunedin, John Patrick Kavanagh . He was curate in South Dunedin (1961–1964) and in the southernmost city of the country, Georgetown, Invercargill (1964–1970) and pastor in South Dunedin (1970–1972) and at the Basilica of Mary in Invercargill (1972–1983).

Pope John Paul II appointed him Coadjutor Bishop of Dunedin on January 27, 1983 . The Bishop of Dunedin, John Patrick Kavanagh, ordained him episcopal on May 3 of that year ; Co- consecrators were James Darcy Cardinal Freeman , Archbishop of Sydney , and Thomas Stafford Williams , Archbishop of Wellington .

With the death of John Patrick Kavanagh on July 10, 1985, he succeeded him as Bishop of Dunedin and was instituted on August 19, 1985. Boyle was President of the New Zealand Bishops' Conference from 1991 to 1997.

On May 24, 2004, John Paul II accepted his early resignation.
