Leone Strozzi

Leone Strozzi (born October 15, 1515 , † June 28, 1554 at Scarlino ) was a diplomat of the Order of Malta in Constantinople and admiral of the French Navy .

Life

Leone Strozzi was the son of Filippo Strozzi the Elder. J. (1488–1538) and Clarice Strozzi , née de 'Medici (1493–1528) and a brother of Piero Strozzi (1510–1558). He was unmarried and had no offspring.

After his father's defeat in the Battle of Montemurlo , he fled with his brother to France at the court of Catherine de Medici . He later fought against Cosimo I de 'Medici in the Battle of Scannagallo near Marciano della Chiana , but lost again.

He joined the Order of Malta in 1530. The Knight of Malta became prior of Capua and acted as commander of the order's galleys from 1536 to 1552. Leone Strozzi was the Maltese ambassador to Constantinople in 1544.

Later Strozzi was admiral in the French Navy, where he fought numerous battles against Spain and England .

He fell in 1554 during the siege of Scarlino in Tuscany during the unsuccessful defense of the Republic of Siena against Florentine and imperial troops by the ball of an arquebus .
