Leonhard Fanto (born September 8, 1874 in Vienna , † September 16, 1940 in Dresden ) was an Austrian painter , graphic artist , draftsman and set designer .

Fanto is known for his costume designs and genre scenes from the Balkans as well as his correspondence with Max Slevogt in the context of a portrait and the stage design for the opera Don Giovanni , which is in the Palatinate State Library in Speyer .

life and work

Fanto was trained in Vienna by Franz Kopallik . From 1892 to 1895 he studied at the Academy of Fine Arts there with Siegmund L'Allemand . He spent the following two years at the private Académie Julian in Paris with Jean-Paul Laurens and Jean-Joseph Benjamin-Constant . From around 1898 he traveled to the Balkans and subsequently worked in Vienna. In 1902 he was employed as artistic director for costume design at the New Court Theater (Semperoper) in Dresden . In this role he designed the set and costumes for the new productions. He owes his reputation to his work on historical productions. He also painted costume pictures and genre scenes from the Balkans. His costume pictures in historical uniforms are known. In 1904 he painted for the German Emperor and in 1905 for the Bavarian Prince Regent Luitpold .

Fanto died in 1940 and was buried in the Inner Catholic Cemetery in Dresden.
