Leopold Gegenbauer

Leopold Bernhard Gegenbauer (born February 2, 1849 in Asperhofen , Lower Austria ; † June 3, 1903 in Gießhübl , Lower Austria) was an Austrian mathematician .

Life

Leopold Gegenbauer studied at the universities in Vienna and Berlin. In 1875 he was appointed associate professor at the newly founded University of Chernivtsi . In 1878 he switched to a professorship at the University of Innsbruck , and in 1893 he took over a chair at the University of Vienna . In 1900 he was elected a member of the Leopoldina .

Gegenbauer is known for important work in the field of number theory , algebra , integration theory and function theory .

The Gegenbauer polynomials are named after him, as are the Gegenbauer rho functions Ρ and ρ (large and small rho ), which are defined as follows.

In 1973 the Gegenbauerweg in Vienna- Floridsdorf (21st district) was named after him.
