Leopold Hafner

Leopold Hafner (born October 22, 1930 in Wallern / Böhmerwald , † November 4, 2015 in Passau ) was a German artist and sculptor.

Life

After 1946 he began an apprenticeship as a sculptor with Ludwig Pinsker in Perlesreut and graduated in 1951 with the journeyman's examination at the state college for wood carving in Zwiesel . He went to Munich and studied with Josef Henselmann at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts and graduated in 1959. Leopold Hafner did a difficult portrait job, so that Henselmann took him into his private studio and let him work on the high altarpiece of Passau Cathedral. He has been working as a freelance artist since 1959, his studio was in the Vornbach Castle in the old brewing room. In 1967 he took on a guest teaching position at the University of Stellenbosch in South Africa . In 1969 he bought the old rectory in Aicha vorm Wald and set up his studio there.

In addition to works of art, Leopold Hafner has also designed numerous church rooms in German-speaking countries and abroad and has received several awards for his work. In the nationwide tender for a competition to redesign a bust of the natural scientist Gregor Mendel for the Walhalla near Regensburg , he won the award and was commissioned with the design.

Hafner designed and donated the 2003 Art Prize for German-Czech Understanding of the Adalbert Stifter Association.
