Leopold Hofmann (resistance fighter)
Leopold Hofmann (born on September 8, 1900 in Vienna ; died on March 19, 1945 in Flossenbürg concentration camp ) was an Austrian communist resistance fighter against National Socialism . He was arrested by the Vienna Gestapo , interrogated, deported to the concentration camp and murdered there.
Life
Leopold Hofmann was arrested in January 1944 for working for the KPÖ and deported to the Flossenbürg concentration camp on August 14, 1944 . He was put to death in its Hersbruck subcamp on March 19, 1945, a few weeks before the fall of the Nazi regime .
Commemoration
A memorial and a memorial stone commemorate the resistance fighter:
- On November 1, 1954, the freedom fighter memorial was unveiled in the Atzgersdorf cemetery , designed by the sculptor Franz Pixner . It commemorates a total of 24 resistance fighters who lost their lives to Austrofascism and the Nazi regime : Anton Bergauer , Leo Dworschak , Hans Fröhlich , Karl Griesbach , Franz Hauer , Franz and Michael Heindl , Leopold Hofmann, Therese Klostermann , Richard Lehmann , Rudolf Mekiska , Viktor Mrnustik , Heinrich Müller , Josef Müller , Leopold Müller , Josef Nagl , Johann Sauer , Karl Schafhauser , Fritz Seiler , Max Spanner , Leopold Stípčak , Richard Suchy , Johann Teufel and Josef Willinger .
- As part of the memorial event on the occasion of the anniversary of the November pogroms in 1938, the Stones of Remembrance Initiative in Liesing laid a memorial stone for Leopold Hofmann in front of his last house on Tagliebergasse 1 in Vienna- Atzgersdorf in November 2014 .
