Leopold von Neumann
Leopold Freiherr von Neumann (* 23. October 1811 in Zalischyky , Galicia , † 7. December 1888 in Gries near Bolzano ) was an Austrian jurist and heads of state and international lawyers . From 1849 to 1883 he worked as a professor of international law and statistics at the University of Vienna and from 1869 onwards he was also a member of the Herrenhaus, one of the two chambers of the Austrian Imperial Council .
Life
Leopold Freiherr von Neumann was born in Salishchyky in 1811 and, after attending grammar school in Chernivtsi , studied law at the universities of Lemberg and Vienna , which he completed with a doctorate in 1834 . Subsequently, he was court chamber procurator and also supplent (assistant teacher) for natural law and statistics at the Theresian Knight Academy (Theresianum) in Vienna . From 1840 he taught there as a professor the subjects of international law and diplomatic history. From 1849 to 1883 he worked as a professor of international law and statistics at the University of Vienna, where he was rector in 1867/1868 and dean of the law faculty in 1856/1857 .
In 1848, after the March Revolution , he was elected to the newly formed Austrian Reichstag , of which he was a member until it was dissolved the following year. In addition, he was a member of the Vienna City Council several times . From 1869 he was a lifetime member of the manor house, which was one of the two chambers of the Austrian Imperial Council . He died in Gries near Bozen in 1888 .
Awards
In 1874 Leopold Freiherr von Neumann was appointed a member of the Institut de Droit international (Institute for International Law) founded the year before . In 1880 he was raised to the baron status, and he was also a knight of the Franz Joseph Order and the Order of the Iron Crown .
