Lena Lervik (born April 7, 1940 in Kristianstad , Skåne län ) is a Swedish sculptor who mainly creates mother figures out of bronze .

Life

Lena Lervik is married to the sculptor Thomas Qvarsebo, with whom she has a son. From her first marriage she has two daughters and a son.

education

Lervik studied successively for one year at the École des Beaux-Arts in Geneva , two years of sculpture at the faculty of the art school , then five years of sculpture and one year of graphic techniques at the Kungliga Konsthögskolan Mejan in Stockholm . She has been doing sculpting since 1960 and her first solo exhibition took place in 1976.

Topic

The central themes of her work are fertility and motherhood ; the central figures are the Madonnas and Mother Mary , mythological mother figures such as mother goddesses and fertility goddesses as well as modern mothers. In her work she uses seven symbols: germinating grain, spiral, fish, dove, moon, bees and Madonna. The portrayal of mother and child is of great importance to her. According to her own statements, she symbolizes life-giving power and sexuality in her mother figures, and myths from prehistoric times are objectified in her figures.

She consciously shapes her sculptures in strongly emphasized feminine forms and sets them against the “ theoretical ideals of beauty of our time”. Lena Lervik is able to give her mother characters a facial expression that reflects their dignity and their feelings. Suffering, tolerance and love are expressed in the faces of their mother figures. They show a clarity and lightness that are communicated to their viewers in an easily understandable language.

She makes her sculptures mainly in bronze but also in ceramics and as so-called grass sculptures (plant sculptures).

In the exhibition Lena Lervik Retrospective from December 1, 2007 to January 13, 2008, there was a visitor record with more than 10,000 visitors.

She has lived and worked in Stockholm for more than 30 years .
