The Lesse is a 94 km long river in the Walloon part of Belgium .

geography

The river has its source in the south-eastern Ardennes near Ochamps on the border with Libramont . The uppermost left tributary Our (largely municipal area of Paliseul ) must not be confused with the German-Belgian-Luxembourg border river of the same name and flows opposite the village of Lesse (municipality of Libin ). Between Belvaux and Han-sur-Lesse , the Lesse flows underground through the karst cave system of the Grotte de Han . About 2 km after its re-emergence, it takes in its largest tributary, the Lomme . This exceeds the Lesse in terms of flow rate and length at the mouth. From Wanlin , where the Biran joins, to its union with the Meuse, the Lesse has formed meanders that cut deep into the mountains at Houyet . The estuary is in Anseremme, a southern district of the city of Dinant .

Sights and leisure

The Lesse valley and this part of the Ardennes are wooded. The area surrounding the caves forms the Lesse et Lomme National Park . There are several castles on the heights of the lower reaches. The route of the former railway line from Houyet to Rochefort is used as a cycle and hiking route for the RAVeL network . Several canoe rentals organize canoe tours on the lower reaches.

  • The river disappears through the gouffre (= abyss) in the mountain.
