Levern Hill

The Leverner Hügel , also called Leverner Stiftshügel or Lierwernske Hürbel in Low German , is located in the municipality of Stemwede in the north of North Rhine-Westphalia . It is up to 67.9  m above sea level. NN high.

location

The Levern Hill is almost completely in the Stemwede district of Levern , but its foothills extend to Niedermehnen , Twiehausen and Destel . The Leverner Hügel is located, just like its "little sister", the Sunderner Hügel , in the Rahden-Diepenauer Geest . The Levern Hill is surrounded by the Great Dieck River in an arc . Coming from the south-east it passes the south, the west and the north-west of the hill.

In contrast to the Sunderner Hügel, the Leverner Hügel is mostly built on or used for agriculture. The hill is about four kilometers long and up to six kilometers wide with the foothills reaching as far as Twiehausen. It gives the historical core of Levern, at least around the church, an almost mountainous character, with comparatively steep alleys and streets that you would not necessarily expect in the North German Plain.

Worth seeing

On the hill is the 1000-year-old former monastery village of Levern with many old half-timbered houses . Directly on the summit of the Levern collegiate hill, the Levern double church, which is visible from afar because of its chalky white color, dates back to 1227 and consists of a parish and a former collegiate church. In addition to the former Cistercian church, there are other remarkable buildings on the hill, such as B. the old monastery building and the home of the famous cookbook author Henriette Davidis . There was also a synagogue in Levern until September (!) 1938 .

Surveys

The Levern Hill is up to 67.9 meters high, although you have to note that the tower of the church, which stands on the top, also measures over 30 meters. The elevations of the Leverner Hill are nameless except for the "Stiftshügel", the highest elevation.

Flowing waters

The Great Dieck River , a tributary of the Great Aue , which is a tributary of the Weser , flows in a large arc around Levern or the Leverner Hügel .
