The Leviviridae are a family of viruses that act as bacteriophages to attack various bacteria including Enterobacteria , Caulobacter , Pseudomonas, and Acinetobacter . The taxonomy of the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses (ICTV) as of November 2018 recognizes two genera , each with two species .

They are small RNA viruses with a linear, single-stranded RNA - genome of positive polarity , which encode only four proteins . All phages in this family need bacterial pili to bind to and infect the host cell (bacterial cell).

Systematics

With ICTV as of November 2018, the family has two genera, each with two officially recognized species (species):

  • Family Leviviridae

construction

The virus particles (virions) of the Leviviridae are not enveloped with icosahedral or spherical geometries and with a triangulation number (symmetry) T = 3 . The diameter is about 26 nm. The genome is linear and not segmented with a size of about 4000 nucleotide bases . It codes for 4 proteins .

Mode of action

After entering the host cell, replication takes place in the model for RNA viruses of positive polarity. The virus emerges from the host cell through bacterial lysis .

The four encoded proteins are the coat protein (for the capsid ), the replicase , the maturation protein (A protein) and the lysis protein, the associated genes are called cp , rep , mat and lys .
