Libor Šíma

Libor Šíma (* 1967 in Aussig ) is a German orchestral musician ( bassoon , tenor saxophone ) who has emerged as a soloist in both classical and jazz music. He is also increasingly active as a composer .

Šíma, who grew up in Schwäbisch Hall as the son of conductor Jiři Šíma since he was two , received his first piano lessons at the age of nine and then clarinet and saxophone lessons from his father at the age of 13. As a gifted person, he was able to leave grammar school at the age of 16 after passing the entrance exam at the Stuttgart University of Music and Performing Arts in 1983 . He has won several prizes at “ Jugend musiziert ”, also a national winner for classical saxophone, but was also a member of the Baden-Württemberg State Youth Jazz Orchestra.

While still studying classical music with Hermann Herder, he worked as a temporary worker in various orchestras ( Frankfurt Radio Symphony Orchestra , Israel Philharmonic Orchestra , International Bach Academy , Stuttgart Philharmonic ). In 1987 he joined the SDR radio symphony orchestra as a bassoonist ; In 2001 he advanced to the position of solo bassoonist in the orchestra that is now part of the SWR . In the field of jazz Šíma performed with Chaka Khan , the Pointer Sisters , Kenny Wheeler , Eberhard Weber , Joe Lovano and others. He belongs to the Stuttgart band in the Bix and can also be heard on recordings with Sammy Nestico , Olivia Trummer and Slavko Benić . With his saxophone colleagues Dieter Kraus , Thorsten Skringer, Ralf Ritscher and the double bass player Markus Bodenseh he also forms the ensemble "The Fifth Man".

During his studies, Šíma already showed his talent as a composer when he won the “Musica Nova” composition competition. In addition to some chamber music works, his jazz suite “Stuttgarter Platz”, a composition commissioned by the city of Stuttgart in 2002, attracted attention. His “Double Concerto”, a composition commissioned by the Stuttgart Chamber Orchestra , was premiered in 2005 under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies . In 2014 his work “I am the Drum”, which he had written for the SWR big band , the radio symphony orchestra and the station's vocal ensemble , had its premiere . In December 2016, a new work of his came on stage with a new version of the Christmas story after Charles Dickens . Together with director and producer Martin Mühleis, he created a musical stage fairytale for the two actors Miroslav Nemec and Udo Wachtveitl , who are also known as Tatort commissioners.
