Dieter Kraus

Dieter Kraus (* 1972 in Ulm ) is a German saxophonist . He plays as a chamber and orchestral musician as well as in the jazz area .

Career

Kraus started playing the saxophone at the age of 9 . From 1992 he studied at the Richard Strauss Conservatory in Munich . He graduated there in 1998 with the concert exam. Since then he has worked with various groups, but also as a soloist and saxophone teacher at the Ulm Music School.

Orchestras and groups

Dieter Kraus worked in various orchestras and musical groups. His career began in the Ulm boys' music . In 1994 he founded the chamber music quartet Saxofourte with saxophonist friends and played the alto saxophone there from 1994 to 2006 . In 1998 the quartet received a record deal with the major label BMG .

In addition, Kraus played repeatedly in renowned orchestras, including the State Philharmonic of Rhineland-Palatinate , the Württemberg Philharmonic in Reutlingen, the Bavarian Radio Symphony Orchestra , the Ulm Philharmonic and the National Polish Orchestra. At the same time, Kraus started working with the organist Andreas Gräsle; the project was expanded to a trio in 2001 with trumpeter Joo Kraus . He can also be heard on Tab Two records .

After leaving Saxofourte, he founded the ensemble Der Fifth Mann together with saxophonists Thorsten Skringer, Libor Šíma , Ralf Ritscher and double bass player Markus Bodenseh , with whom he moved a little away from chamber music and into jazz. In 2017 he also founded the band Klangwelle . In the same year he interpreted the piece Auf dem Podium by Günter Buhles , which was also published on phonograms.

Prizes and awards

In 1989 and 1991 Kraus was awarded 2nd place in the national competition " Jugend musiziert ". In 1992 he received an artist grant from the city of Ulm. In 1997 he won first prize at the international chamber music competition in Verona with the Saxofourte quartet .
