Lidia Jorge

Lídia Jorge (born June 18, 1946 in Boliqueime , Algarve ) is a Portuguese writer .

life and work

She spent her youth as an only child with her mother and other female family members in the Algarve. After finishing school in Faro , she moved to Lisbon and studied Romance languages at the University of Lisbon . With her first husband, an officer in the Air Force , she stayed in Angola for a few years during the colonial war and then in Mozambique .

Her first novel O Dia dos Prodígios ( The Day of Miracles ), published in 1979, became a major work in modern Portuguese literature . In 1988, A Costa dos Murmúrios ( The Coast of Whispers ) followed, a book that reflects the processing of the past of the colonial experience in Africa . In 2011 she published A Noite das Mulheres Cantoras and in March 2014 Os Memoráveis .

Honourings and prices

Lídia Jorge won the Casa de Mateus Foundation Prize , the Bordalo Literature Prize from the Casa da Imprensa in Lisbon , the Prémio Máxima of Literature , the PEN Prize for Fiction and, in 2000, the Prix ​​Jean Monnet for European Literature . In 2005 she was named Chevalier des French Ordre des Arts et des Lettres . With O Vento Assobiando nas Gruas (2002), Lídia Jorge won the Grand Prize of the Portuguese Association of Writers. In 2006, together with her long-time translator Karin von Schweder-Schreiner, she was awarded the first ever Albatros Literature Prize for her novel . Lídia Jorge received an honorary doctorate from the Universidade do Algarve on December 15, 2010 on the occasion of the publication of her first work O Dia dos Prodígios 30 years ago.
