action

Marc teaches as a literature professor at a private university in the Alps . He leads a writing seminar, which is a compulsory course in the course. The head of literature is his colleague and competitor Richard. Marc is known for his affairs with female students. His latest affair is the fun-loving student Barbara, whom he takes with him to a chalet in the mountains that he and his sister live in. The next morning she lies dead in bed. Shortly thereafter, she is reported missing and a police investigation begins.

Marc has had an intimate, albeit open, relationship with his sister Marianne, who also works as a librarian at the university, for years. At times it is marked by jealousy and control. Richard strives for a relationship with Marc's sister Marianne. She replies that. She once speaks of sacrificing herself for her brother, whose job is at risk. At the university, Marc is also visited by Barbara's stepmother Anna, who has only recently been married to Barbara's father; her husband is working as a secret service worker in the Sahel. She hardly knows her stepdaughter and wants to know more about her. Although he is advised to keep his distance from Anna, Marc begins an affair with her, with her taking the initiative.

In addition to the affair with Anna, Marc is aggressively courted by the student Annie. She wants a private lesson with him and offers herself to him sexually openly. He makes an appointment with her, but lets her stand because otherwise Anna would have witnessed this meeting. Annie reacts angrily and her influential father forces the university administration to dismiss Marc for insulting her daughter, which is withdrawn shortly afterwards after a meeting between Richard and Marianne. At a college party, Marc is harassed by Annie and kisses her. He promises her a rendezvous and leaves early because of a severe headache. On the way home, he gets a severe nosebleed and is stopped by a police officer. The mood becomes aggressive. Marc drives to Anna and sleeps with her. On the way home he discovers the body of the policeman in the back seat of his car. He doesn't know what happened and dumps the body in a ravine in the mountains. Here he also finds Barbara's corpse, which he pushes into the depths.

During a private lesson with Annie, Marc refuses to advertise. He gets lumbago . He confesses to Annie that he is with Anna. Annie distrusts her and offers to investigate her. Shortly afterwards Anna invites Marc to a weekend vacation and he accepts. Arrived at her vacation spot, Marc receives a call from Annie. She reveals to him that Anna is actually a policewoman set on him. Marc realizes that Anna always tried to convict him of the murder of Barbara. In the holiday home by the lake, he tells Anna that he knows who she is. He reveals the location of Barbara's body, but also says that he has no memory of the crime. She makes it clear that the house is already surrounded by police officers and admits that she really loves him, but that her job is over. He promises to surrender and she leaves the house. Marc lets gas flow into the house from the gas fireplace. As a farewell to his sister Marianne, he wrote the ambiguous sentence “Love is the perfect crime”. When he lights his cigarette, there is an explosion in which he is killed.
