Lilium parryi is a species from the genus of lilies ( Lilium ) in the American section . She is occasionally in culture.

description

Lilium parryi reaches a height of up to 190 cm. The bulbs are round and reach a diameter of about 5 cm, they are covered with white scales and form rhizomes .

The stem is hard, smooth and straight. The leaves are narrow, lanceolate and traversed by parallel nerves, up to 30 cm long and 5 cm wide. They are arranged in one to five whorls of three to eighteen leaves.

The plant blooms from late May to early September with up to 15 horizontal to upright in a panicle standing trumpet-shaped flowers with a glossy texture. The fragrant, hermaphrodite flowers are threefold. The six identical bloom cladding sheets ( tepals ) are slightly rolled backwards. The color of the flowers is bright lemon yellow with tiny brown spots. Each flower has three carpels and six stamens. The anthers are brown, the pollen brick-red and the filaments light greenish. The individual flowers reach a length of up to 10 cm.

The seeds ripen in seed capsules up to 6 cm long and 1.7 cm wide and germinate immediately and epigeously .

distribution

The plant is in Arizona (where they already blooms in May) and in California (flowering from July / August) endemic . She is often in the San Gabriel Mountains .

Lilium parryi is a mountain plant that occurs at altitudes between 1300 and 2600 m above sea level. It often grows near mountain streams or in mixed coniferous forests .

ecology

With its very long flowers, Lilium parryi cannot be pollinated by all insects, but a reliable pollinator is Hyles lineata , the New World swarm of lines .

Systematics

It has been established that Lilium parryi has a common ancestor with Lilium pardalinum . In addition, the plant Lilium washingtonianum is surprisingly similar, which can certainly be traced back to evolutionary convergence.
