Wolf-Dieter Storl (born October 1, 1942 in Crimmitschau in Saxony ) is a German-American cultural anthropologist , ethnobotanist and author . Storl's publications deal primarily with ethnobotany, ethnomedicine , traditional phytotherapy and cultural ecology . Even Indian religiosity , organic farming and horticulture are among the topic.

Life

Storl grew up in Germany. At the age of eleven, Storl emigrated to America with his parents and lived in rural Ohio until his studies . It was there that he became interested in nature, forests and plants:

“I understood that people divided the world into two sides: on the one hand there was nature, the wilderness, the evil - and on the other hand there was civilization, the ordered world, the good. In throwing the baseball bat away, I had chosen - without realizing it - the wild, the untamed nature. From now on I spent every free minute in the forest, in the great outdoors. There was a universe to discover. "

- Wolf-Dieter Storl : Ö1 - Images of People , 2012

After gaining a bachelor's degree in anthropology (1966) from Ohio State University , Storl became an assistant in cultural anthropology at Kent State University (Ohio). At the same time he conducted a field research by participant observation ( participant observation by) in a traditional spiritualists settlement. (Masters Thesis, The Structural Analysis of a Spiritualist Camp ). After receiving his MA ( sociology ), he was appointed full-time lecturer in sociology and anthropology from the same university . In 1970 he did post-graduate studies in ethnology at the University of Vienna and he was a visiting lecturer at the Institute for International Studies ( Palais Kinski, Vienna ).

As an American Fulbright scholar ( American Exchange Scholarship Program, 1973-1974) received his doctorate Storl to Dr. phil ( magna cum laude ) at the University of Bern (Switzerland) in 1974. From 1975 to 1978 he worked as a sociology and anthropology lecturer in Oregon (RC College), where he also acted as Facuilty Advisor for Native American Students and also a teaching garden for biodynamic agriculture at the university. From 1978 to 1979 he was visiting professor for cultural ecology at the University of Bern (Switzerland) and carried out field research in the Emmental and in the Charente-Maritime department . From 1980 to 1982 Storl managed the biodynamic garden of the Camphill Community in Village Aigues Vertes, Bernex (Canton of Geneva ) and was a seminar teacher at the Séminaire pour la Formation de Socio-Therapeuts at the same location. From 1982 to 1984 he was a visiting scholar at Benares Hindu University (BHU) in Uttar Pradesh , India . Study trips and ethno-religious field research in Bangladesh , Burma , Thailand , China and Japan followed . From 1984 to 1985 Storl was a lecturer at Sheridan College in Wyoming , where he read ethnobotany, ethnomedicine, religious ethnology, Native American culture and at the same time maintained intensive contact with the medicine people (Bill Tallbull, George Elkshoulder) of the Cheyenne for the purpose of ethnobotanical data collection. From 1985 to 1986 Storl lived with his wife in Kerala , North India and Nepal for the purpose of collecting data on the subject of Shaivism and cultural ecology .

A serious illness that afflicted Storl during his last stay in India led to a complete reorientation of life. Instead of pursuing an academic career in America , he and his wife found a remote house in the Allgäu , to which they moved in 1988.

The ethnobotanist and cultural anthropologist Storl is a book author. Storl also leads plant seminars, ethnobotanical workshops, herb hikes and accepts invitations to international conferences and symposia.

Private

Storl is married to an American from Wyoming. They have a son and a daughter together. The family lives on a remote farm in the western Allgäu . The courtyard is a former knight's seat built in 1188 and hidden in the forest.

criticism

Storl's theses on naturopathy are controversial. In particular, his book Healing Borreliosis Naturally - a disease Storl himself claims to suffer from - attracted heavy criticism.

In interviews, Storl described certain publications as a smear campaign against herbal medicine and contradicted the carcinogenic effects of pyrrolizidine alkaloids in comfrey and coltsfoot on the liver under normal use.

His views on the climate crisis in an interview on the controversial YouTube channel KenFM also met with criticism.
