Lin Hwai-min ( Chinese  林懷民 , Pinyin Lín Huáimín , born February 19, 1947 in Chiayi , Taiwan ) is a Taiwanese dancer, choreographer and writer. He is the founder of the Cloud Gate Dance Theater .

Life

He was born in 1947 in Xingang 新港 鄉 Township, Chiayi 嘉義 區 Area (now Chiayi County ), Tainan County , Taiwan. His great-grandfather Lin Weichao came from Longxi near Zhangzhou漳州 and had passed his licentiate ( Xiucai ) in 1887 ( Guangxu 13) . His grandfather Lin Kaitai was a doctor trained in Japan, and his father Lin Jinsheng was the first district administrator in Chiayi County.

In 1961, when she was 14, Lin Hwai-min attended Taichung First Middle School . That year José Limón's American dance company came to Taiwan and sparked Lin Hwai-min's interest in modern dance . It was at this time that his first literary attempts were made, one of the major newspapers, the United Daily News , printed his story “Kinderlied” ( Erge ). With the fee he attended a first two-month dance course. The next year he moved to Weidao High School and passed the university entrance examination in 1965. Lin Hwai-min enrolled in the Law School of Chengchi National University in Taipei . In the following year he switched from law to journalism and began at the same time with irregular dance training. a. with the American trained dancer Huang Zhongliang 黃忠良. In 1967, the Taiwanese dancer Wang Renlu 王仁璐 first introduced modern dance after Martha Graham at a performance in Taipei's Zhongshan Hall . Lin was fascinated by Graham's modern choreography and wanted to study her dance technique. In 1969, at the age of 22, he published the short story Chan蟬 (title of the English translation: Cicada ) and went to the University of Missouri after graduating to take up a master's degree in journalism. At the same time he trained at the university dance school Modern Dance and learned from Martha Graham and Merce Cunningham . In 1972 he graduated from the Institute of English Literature in the Writers' Workshop of the University of Iowa with a Master of Fine Arts. He returned to Taipei the following year and founded Taiwan's first modern dance company, the Cloud Gate Dance Theater .

In 1980 he received the sixth National Award for Arts in Taiwan and the third Wu Sanlian Art Prize. In 1983, at the age of 36, he founded the Department of Dance at Taipei National University of the Arts. In 1986 he was awarded the Lifetime Achievement Prize in the Asian Artist category by the New York City Department of Culture. The books Shuo wu說 舞 ("About Dance") and Ca jian er guo擦肩而過 "Touched in passing" were published in 1993 by Yuanliu Taipei Publishing House. In 1996 a stay at the Graz Opera followed , where the Rashomon opera was written. Lin Hwai-min became an honorary member of the Hong Kong Academy for Performing Arts in 1997 . In 1999, at 53, he received the Ramon Magsaysay Award , also known as the “Asian Nobel Prize” . In Cambodia, he helped dancers design a traditional dance curriculum, saving Khmer dances from oblivion. In 2000, Lin was named "Great Choreographers of the 20th Century" by Dance Europe magazine . Ballet International magazine voted him "Personality of the Year" that same year. Lin Hwai-min received an honorary doctorate from Chiao Tung National University in 2002 and an honorary doctorate from Taiwan National University in 2006 . The Discovery Channel showed the documentary Portraits Taiwan: Lin Hwai-min in 2005 . On May 12, 2009 he was honored for his life's work at the Movimentos dance festival.
