General

The word Lind comes from linden trees that were here in the 19th century. Lind spreads between the Drau in the west ( Fellach ), the city center in the south, Gritschach in the north and St. Leonhard in the east.

The place is known for the numerous villas that were built here at the end of the 19th century. At that time, the richer population settled here, as land was quite cheap at that time. The special location to the nearby city center triggered a real construction boom.

The first single-family houses were built in the interwar period , but the expansion of Lind began at the end of the Second World War . As a result of the war damage, apartment blocks were built in Lind, as in St. Leonhard, because the population wanted to be quickly accommodated in houses. From the 1950s, more and more single-family houses were built: in just a few years, the entire district was built up, giving it its typical “suburban character”.

schools

There is a school center in Lind:

  • The elementary school Lind is located at Vogelweide Park and was built at the beginning of the 20th century. Even today it has the typical wooden roof with the gables.
  • To the north of the elementary school there is a secondary and polytechnic school, which consists of two wings. The building was built in the early 1970s and will be completely renovated in 2009.
  • The commercial academy (short: HAK) is opposite the elementary school.

Parks and recreation

The Walther von der Vogelweide Park is located at the elementary school. The nearby Drau with a cycle path or the Lind ball game hall , which is located at the secondary school and was built in 1990, is used for recreation .

Infrastructure

Since 2000, streets that are too narrow have turned many streets into one-way streets. From Lind there is a pedestrian bridge to Fellach and a railroad and road bridge to the city center. The main road is the Villach bypass, which runs right through Lind.
