Lippo Hertzka (actually Hertzka Lipót ; born November 19, 1904 in Budapest or 1893 in Vienna , † March 14, 1951 in Montemor-o-Novo , Portugal ) was a Hungarian football player and coach .
Career as a player and coach
Real Sociedad San Sebastián signed Lippo Hertzka as a player after they received positive attention in a friendly against the Essener Turnerbund .
After his playing career with the txuri-urdin , he began his coaching career with them in 1923. After three years he moved to Athletic Bilbao and after another two years he joined Sevilla FC in 1928 . With this team he was able to celebrate his first success in 1929, when they were champions of the Segunda División , but missed promotion in relegation games against Racing Santander . It is not entirely clear whether Hertzka then returned to his old club Schwarz-Weiß Essen for a season .
In 1930 he moved to Real Madrid and led the club in the 1931/32 season to win its first Spanish championship. Despite his success in the championship, he was probably dismissed because of the early elimination in the Copa del Rey in 1932 and internally replaced by Pedro Llorente and the later President Santiago Bernabéu . Hertzka stayed in Spain for three more years, coaching the clubs Hércules CF and Recreativo Granada .
In 1935 he finally left Spain and became a coach at Benfica Lisbon in Portugal . He led the team from the capital in 1936 not only to win the first Portuguese championship title , but also to defend their title twice in the two following years. In 1939 he moved to city rivals Belenenses Lisbon and in 1942 to FC Porto , but he was unable to build on the successful times at both clubs. In 1947 he finally returned to Benfica Lisbon. He finished his coaching career from 1948 until his death in 1951 at União Montemor.
