Lisbon Wuppertal Lisboa is a Portuguese film by director Fernando Lopes about Pina Bausch from 1998. It documents the work of the dance theater Pina Bausch on a new play in Lisbon, from which Masurca Fogo was created.
action
As part of the 100-day festival for Expo 98 in Lisbon , Pina Bausch accepted an invitation and worked on a new piece for three weeks. The result of the various characters who came together through the direction of Pina Bausch was Masurca Fogo , and the work on this was documented by the film director Fernando Lopes.
reception
The documentary was shown on the second channel of the Portuguese public television, RTP . It was subsequently performed internationally. Critics praised the film, especially the poetic approach. Lopes shows the hands, the neck, the shoulders of Pina Bausch, who watch the dancers at work, rigorously and generously in equal measure. One point of criticism was this exclusively observant attitude of the director. The audience interested in dancing lacked more objective information; They would also have liked to see more scenes with specific instructions and interventions from Pina Bausch. Lopes does not document the work of the dance theater in detail, but lets the audience watch it. His focus is on the images and the atmosphere.
The film was released on DVD by Midas Filmes in 2006 as a double edition along with Fernando Lopes' documentary on Alexandre O'Neill . Both films are connected by a poetic approach and the matching fado “Gaivota” sung by Amália Rodrigues .
