Highways in Thailand are called either Thang Luang Phiset ( ทางหลวงพิเศษ ; in English "Motorways") if they are built at ground level, or Thang Phiset ( ทางพิเศษ ; "Expressways") if they are designed as an elevated road (mainly in the greater Bangkok area). Most of the motorways are subject to tolls . In general, there is a speed limit of 120 km / h.

The first highway opened in Thailand in 1981, it was the Chaloem Maha Nakhon Expressway urban highway .

Motorways with green signs are toll-free, those with blue signs are toll-free.

The highways in Thailand are not to be confused with the multi-lane expressways (so-called highways ), which are also often referred to as such, but which do not meet the criteria for highways due to a lack of freedom of intersections and restrictions on the types of vehicles. These multi-lane expressways are modeled on the dual carriageway common in Great Britain .

The highways are not independent, but numbered as part of the general numbering for country roads in Thailand.
