Ensemble town center Essing

Essing with the Randeck castle ruins

The ensemble includes the small market town of Essing in the Altmühltal within the boundaries of its historical buildings as well as the Randeck castle ruins, which rise picturesquely above a dolomite rock. For centuries, the hilltop castle was the dominant center of the small rulership of Randeck, which was owned by the Counts of Abensberg from the 13th century to 1485 , after which it came to the Bavarian dukes and was further lent by them.

The keep, remains of the palace, the curtain walls and the moats have been preserved from the Abensberger period. The most important settlement of the rule was Essing, first mentioned in 976, which developed on the very narrow left bank of the Altmühl, directly at the foot of the high castle rock and in the course of the old valley road, and received market rights in 1336 by Ludwig the Bavarian . Its approximately 60 properties are assigned to a single, 465 m long, paved, narrow street (Oberer Markt / Unterer Markt), which, however, has a parallel lane in the southern part through which farm buildings are usually accessed.

The very small market square is just a rectangular extension of the Upper Market; its appearance is determined by the stepped gable building of the town hall and the bridge gate, which secured access to the place from the Altmühlbrücke. There was no need for any special fortifications along the Altmühl, but there were gate towers at the north and south ends of Marktstrasse until the 19th century, the remnants of which were attached to the castle rock and still show the exact original extent of the market.

Essing gained particular importance through the establishment of the Holy Spirit Monastery in 1359, the buildings of which still determine the entrance to the Untere Markt. In 1378 the parish was moved from the nearby town of Altessing to the monastery chapel. The successor to this chapel is the baroque parish and former collegiate church, the successor to the medieval chapter house is the current rectory, built in 1630, which the Jesuits - who also owned the Randeck estate - moved into the Maltese in 1776.

The bourgeois buildings are mostly one or two-storey plastered gabled houses from the 18th and 19th centuries, many of them still recognizable as Jura houses by their flat saddle roofs. The allocation of these mostly modest buildings to the town hall and the church and parsonage, as well as the allocation of the small market town to the high castle of the rulers, illustrate the political, social and economic processes of the Middle Ages and the early modern period. Remarks

  1. This list may not correspond to the current status of the official list of monuments. The latter can be viewed on the Internet as a PDF using the link given under web links and is also mapped in the Bavarian Monument Atlas . Even these representations, although they are updated daily by the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation , do not always and everywhere reflect the current status. Therefore, the presence or absence of an object in this list or in the Bavarian Monument Atlas does not guarantee that it is currently a registered monument or not. The Bavarian List of Monuments is also an information directory. The property of a monument - and thus the legal protection - is defined in Art. 1 of the Bavarian Monument Protection Act (BayDSchG) and does not depend on the mapping in the Monument Atlas and the entry in the Bavarian Monument List. Objects that are not listed in the Bavarian Monument List can also be monuments if they meet the criteria according to Art. 1 BayDSchG. Early involvement of the Bavarian State Office for Monument Preservation according to Art. 6 BayDSchG is therefore necessary in all projects.
